Future-proofing clinical care for youth with chronic and acute conditions

Research • Experience design • Strategy • Healthcare

This project was designed for the NYU Langone Health who challenged my team to improve the clinical care experience for young patients with chronic conditions by addressing their specific needs and preferences.

Design research

Our team conducted primary and secondary research that included several interviews with child life specialists, youth patients, pediatricians, and nurses. Additionally, 5 youth advisory councils were set up for external outreach to patients across the U.S. to understand the patient frustrations.

The research focused on the 11-16 age group and resulted in the design artifacts such as strategic frameworks to guide the research, insights discovery, and ideation.

Solution

The solution that we have proposed was a design of a framework aimed at helping young patients learn about, receive and give support, and manage their physical health and mental well-being.

The proposed solution was realized as an initiative called CareBuddy, an in-person first, digital experience. It included in-person workshops and an accompanying conversational AI app with educational guides.

The in-person workshops aimed to educate young patients about their chronic conditions, understand the impact on their health, and develop coping mechanisms. While the accompanying conversational AI app was proposed to track their health, store medical records, and provide treatment schedules. We have also included additional educational guides to support their development and well-being.Data collected through this initiative was used to understand and address patients needs effectively and further improve their experience.

Impact

The implementation of CareBuddy is estimated to lead to a significant improvement in the clinical care experience for young patients with chronic conditions. The in-person workshops, combined with the digital app and educational resources, empower young patients to manage their conditions effectively. The solution not only addresses their medical needs but also provides vital support for their mental and emotional well-being.
